In 2020, our research identified safety as the greatest concern for communities across the UK. We convened a group of inspiring people to consider how local people can work with authorities to progress positive change and address their safety fears.
In the session, we heard from Zach Norris, a pioneering US-based public safety campaigner, Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and author of We keep us safe: building secure, just, and inclusive communities. In his book, Zach shifts the conversation around public safety away from fear and towards growth. We asked what this might this mean in a UK context?
The event was chaired by Jon Alexander, Fellow at The Young Foundation and Director of the New Citizenship Project, with insights from Emily Morrison, Head of the Institute for Community Studies, Professor Donna Hall, Chair of New Local, an independent think tank working to unlock community power, and more.
